.....humility

For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Matthew 23:12

A young second lieutenant at Fort Bragg found himself in need of change for a vending machine. Spotting a private, he asked, “Do you have change for a dollar?” The private said cheerfully, "I think so, let me check."

The lieutenant, wanting to establish his authority, corrected him. He said, "Soldier, that is no way to address an officer. Let’s try again. Do you have change for a dollar?" Snapping to attention, the private saluted and responded, “No, sir!”

Leadership isn’t about demanding respect — it’s about earning it. True leadership isn’t based on position, power, or rank but on character and how we treat others.

Throughout his ministry, Jesus demonstrated a radically different kind of leadership. The Son of God, the King of Kings, didn’t walk around demanding recognition or forcing people to bow before him. Instead, he humbled himself, serving others with love and compassion. One of the most powerful moments of his leadership came on the night before his crucifixion when he took on the role of a servant and washed his disciples' feet John 13:12-17.

Jesus didn’t just talk about humility — he lived it. He led by example, not by force. He didn’t seek status, but he had the greatest influence of all time. He didn’t chase after recognition, but his name is exalted above all names.

It’s natural for us all to want recognition, respect, and appreciation. In our workplaces, homes, and communities, we often feel the need to prove our worth, to make sure others see our contributions, and to secure our place of importance. But Jesus reminds us that in God’s kingdom, the path to true greatness is through humility.

When we approach others with kindness rather than arrogance, we gain something far greater than recognition — we build trust, deepen relationships, and reflect the heart of Christ. May we strive to lead not from a place of pride, but from a place of grace, love, and humility.

Lord, help me to lead with humility and grace. Teach me to serve others with love rather than seeking recognition. May my actions reflect your kindness and draw others closer to you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
