Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 6:1

Just one chapter earlier, Jesus said "let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works" Matthew 5:16. Now He warns against doing good "to be seen of them." At first these sound contradictory — shine, but don't perform. The difference is the motive underneath the action. Light that shines does so simply by being lit, not by trying to be noticed. Performance, by contrast, exists specifically because someone is watching.

This raises an honest question: would you still do the kind thing, the honest thing, the disciplined thing, if no one would ever know? Fruit doesn't need applause to keep growing. Performance withers the moment the audience leaves.

Ellen White describes something remarkable about genuine fruit — that its influence often works without the person even being aware of it: "By our unconscious influence others may be encouraged and strengthened, or they may be discouraged, and repelled from Christ and the truth... Thus the light of Christ may shine from you." Steps to Christ, p. 120

Notice the word "unconscious." Real fruit doesn't require constant self-monitoring or stage-managing how it appears to others. It simply flows out of a life connected to Christ, often influencing people in ways we never even calculate or notice.

A Question to Sit With: Is there a good habit or discipline in your life you only maintain consistently when others are watching? What would it look like to let it be genuine, whether seen or not?

Lord, I don't want fruit that depends on an audience. Let my life shine because You are truly at work in me, not because I'm managing how it looks. In Jesus' name,
