Standing Complete in Him

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9

Paul doesn't stop at verse 9. He continues with a line that quietly reorders the whole Christian life: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them Ephesians 2:10

Notice the sequence. We are not saved by good works — we are saved unto them. Obedience, transformation, fruit — none of it causes grace. All of it flows from grace already received. Reverse that order, even slightly, and the gospel quietly turns back into a performance to maintain rather than a gift to rest in.

A Finished Work Still in Progress

Paul makes one more claim worth holding onto: Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ." Philippians 1:6 The same God who saved you is committed to finishing what He started in you. That's not a passive guarantee — it's an active confidence Paul says we can hold. Growth, then, was never meant to be a solo project sustained by willpower. It's His work, carried forward in you.

Ellen White captures this same truth simply: It is the work of God to bring men to lay off their sinful nature, and to receive through faith a new life in Christ Jesus." Steps to Christ, p. 62

There's a difference between standing on solid ground and constantly checking whether the ground is still there. Grace invites you to stop checking. You are His workmanship — already declared complete in Christ, even while still being shaped by Him.

Where in your life are you still quietly striving to finish what God has already promised to complete Himself?
