.....believing

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen Hebrews 11:1

Believing the Promise, Not Just the Feeling

Faith Isn't a Feeling
Yesterday we settled that salvation is a gift, received by faith, not earned by works. Today's question is harder to live out: what happens on the days you don't *feel* forgiven? What happens when guilt lingers even after you've confessed? This is where many sincere believers stumble — not in doctrine, but in daily experience. They wait for a feeling of assurance before they'll believe they're saved. But feelings were never the currency of faith. God's word is.

The Paralytic's Lesson
Ellen White points us to the healing of the paralytic at Bethesda. Jesus told him to rise and walk — and the man didn't wait to feel strength return to his legs before he obeyed. He acted on the word first, and the power came as he moved. She draws the parallel directly to forgiveness: "In like manner you are a sinner. You cannot atone for your past sins; you cannot change your heart and make yourself holy. But God promises to do all this for you through Christ. You believe that promise. You confess your sins and give yourself to God. You will to serve Him. Just as surely as you do this, God will fulfill His word to you." Steps to Christ  p. 51  And a few lines earlier, she gives the simple formula that has anchored generations of believers: "Do not wait to feel that you are made whole, but say, 'I believe it; it is so, not because I feel it, but because God has promised.'"  Steps to Christ, p. 51

Why This Matters for Growth
If your assurance depends on your feelings, it will rise and fall with your circumstances, your sleep, your mood, your last mistake. But if your assurance rests on God's promise, it stands on something that doesn't change. This isn't emotional denial — it's simply trusting God's word over your own shifting sense of things. The feelings of peace and joy tend to follow faith; they were never meant to lead it.

A Question to Sit With: Is there a promise of God I've been waiting to *feel* true before I'll believe it — forgiveness, acceptance, being loved? What would it look like to believe it today simply because He said it?

Father, I confess I often wait for a feeling before I'll trust You fully. Today I choose to believe Your promise over my emotions. You said I am forgiven — so I am. Thank You for a faith that doesn't depend on how I feel today.
