.....fruitful

Now the works of the flesh are evident: adultery, fornication, uncleanness... hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy... But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance. Galatians 5:19-22

Paul lays these two lists side by side on purpose. Notice the language shift — "works" of the flesh, but "fruit" of the Spirit. Works are things we manufacture through effort, plural and scattered, each one produced separately by human striving. Fruit is singular, organic, growing together from one root. You can't manufacture fruit the way you manufacture works — that distinction is the whole point of this week.

This means a person can eliminate individual "works of the flesh" through willpower and discipline while never actually growing spiritual fruit. Ellen White names this exact trap plainly: Education, culture, the exercise of the will, human effort, all have their proper sphere, but here they are powerless. They may produce an outward correctness of behavior, but they cannot change the heart; they cannot purify the springs of life. Steps to Christ, p. 59

That's a hard word for anyone who's confused disciplined behavior with genuine transformation. Willpower can suppress outward works. Only the Spirit produces actual fruit.

Why the Difference Matters

Jesus said something similar using different imagery — that trying to patch old behavior onto an unchanged heart doesn't hold together: No one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. Mark 2:22 New wine needs a new container. In the same way, real fruit needs a heart the Spirit has actually renewed — not an old, unchanged heart wrapped in improved behavior.

A Question to Sit With: Is there an area where you've suppressed a "work of the flesh" through willpower, without the corresponding fruit of the Spirit actually growing in its place?
