Consecration: Giving All, Withholding Nothing

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service Romans 12:1

A Different Kind of Sacrifice

Old Testament sacrifices died on the altar. Paul describes something stranger — a *living* sacrifice. That's the paradox of consecration: it's not about ending your life, but about handing over your will while you're still fully alive to use it. It's a daily, conscious surrender rather than a one-time transaction.

Consecration falls apart the moment we start negotiating which parts of our life are "off the table." Jesus was blunt about the totality He asks for: "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me." Luke 9:23 "Daily" is the key word. Consecration isn't a decision made once at conversion and then filed away — it's renewed every morning. Paul says something similar about his own life, using a strange present-tense confession: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." Galatians 2:20

Notice the order — Christ's love and sacrifice come first "who loved me, and gave himself for me", and consecration is the natural response to that love, not a bargaining chip to earn it. Scripture also shows us what partial consecration looks like. A wealthy young man came to Jesus sincerely wanting eternal life, kept the commandments faithfully — yet walked away sorrowful when Jesus touched the one thing he wasn't willing to surrender: "But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions." Matthew 19:22 He wasn't rejected for lacking devotion in general — he simply wouldn't consecrate *everything*. 

Ellen White names exactly what's at stake in moments like this: God does not require us to give up anything that it is for our best interest to retain." Steps to Christ, p. 44 The things we cling to instead of surrendering are never actually protecting us — they're just the last things standing between us and what God wants to give in their place.

A Question to Sit With

Is there an area of your life you've quietly kept off the altar — something you're managing yourself rather than surrendering?
