.....conviction

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment... Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. John 16:8, 13

Before the Spirit ever transforms us, He first shows us what needs transforming. This is uncomfortable but essential — conviction isn't the Spirit being harsh with us; it's Him being honest with us, because honesty is the doorway to real change. Without it, we'd keep managing sin instead of ever being free from it.

David describes this exact experience — a quickened awareness of guilt that becomes unbearable to carry silently: For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight. Psalm 51:3-4 David doesn't run from that awareness — he leans into it, right before pleading for a clean heart in the following verses. Conviction, rightly received, doesn't push us away from God. It sends us running toward Him.

Ellen White describes exactly this quickening, and what it produces when the Spirit does His work honestly in us: As your conscience has been quickened by the Holy Spirit, you have seen something of the evil of sin, of its power, its guilt, its woe; and you look upon it with abhorrence Steps to Christ, p. 49

That abhorrence isn't self-loathing — it's clarity. Once we see sin the way the Holy Spirit shows it to us, we stop excusing it and start longing to be free of it. This is the necessary first step before any real growth can follow.

A Question to Sit With: Is there something the Holy Spirit has been quietly bringing to your attention that you've been avoiding looking at honestly?

Dear Jesus, thank You for caring enough to show me the truth about myself. Don't let me run from conviction — let it lead me straight to You instead. In Your name
