*"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:26
Jesus didn't leave His disciples with a set of instructions and wish them luck. He promised a Person — the Holy Spirit — to do in them what they could never do in themselves. This matters as we move from abiding into the actual work of transformation: growth isn't self-generated willpower with a spiritual label attached. It's the Spirit's ongoing work in a surrendered life.
The prophet Zechariah received a word that still cuts against our instincts today: Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts Zechariah 4:6 We tend to read our own spiritual stagnation as a discipline problem — if only we tried harder, prayed longer, resisted more firmly. Scripture keeps redirecting that instinct. The change we're after was never meant to come from gritted teeth. It comes from the Spirit's power at work in us.
Paul describes exactly what this Spirit-driven change looks like — not external rule-keeping, but internal transformation: But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18
Notice the passive verb — "are changed." Not "change ourselves." We behold; the Spirit transforms. Our part is fixing our attention on Christ. His part is the actual reshaping of who we are, gradually, "from glory to glory," not overnight and not by force.
Ellen White describes this same reality in simple terms worth carrying with you today: It is the privilege of every soul to be a living branch of the living Vine... The Holy Spirit is the breath of spiritual life in the soul. Steps to Christ, p. 68
A Question to Sit With: Where have you been relying on willpower to produce change that only the Spirit can actually bring about?
Dear Holy Spirit, thank You that growth was never left to my strength. Do in me what I cannot do myself. Change me from the inside, as I keep my eyes fixed on Jesus. In Jesus' name,
