Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit... Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them Matthew 7:16-17, 20

Jesus makes a claim here that unsettles anyone who's spent years trying to look holy through effort: a corrupt tree simply cannot produce good fruit, no matter how hard it strains. This is the difference between performance and genuine fruit. Performance can mimic good behavior through willpower, image management, or fear of consequences. Fruit, by contrast, only grows out of what the tree actually is at the root.

This distinction matters because it's so easy to fake the outward behavior while the heart underneath stays unchanged. Jesus warns about exactly this a few verses later: Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven Matthew 7:21

Correct words, religious performance, even impressive spiritual activity — none of it substitutes for actual transformation. The fruit test isn't about catching people in hypocrisy for sport; it's a mercy, because it keeps us from mistaking performance for the real thing in our own lives.

Ellen White describes what happens when the change is real rather than manufactured — and it's remarkably specific: Those who become new creatures in Christ Jesus will bring forth the fruits of the Spirit... They will no longer fashion themselves according to the former lusts... The things they once hated they now love, and the things they once loved they hate Steps to Christ, p. 58

This isn't cosmetic. It's a reversal of actual affections, not just adjusted behavior layered over an unchanged heart. That's the difference between a corrupt tree forcing out artificial fruit and a good tree simply producing what its nature now is.

A Question to Sit With: Is there an area where you've been managing behavior through willpower rather than experiencing a genuine change of what you actually love and hate?

Lord, I don't want fruit I've manufactured — I want fruit that grows because You've changed me at the root. Reveal anywhere I've been performing instead of transformed. In Jesus' name,
