.....outward

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends John 15:12-13

Love That Overflows Outward
Love with a Measuring Stick. Jesus doesn't just tell us to love one another — He gives us the standard: "as I have loved you." That phrase isn't a vague warmth or general good will. It's measured against a love that gave everything, holding nothing back. This is where abiding stops being private and starts becoming visible. A branch that's truly connected to the vine doesn't just enjoy the nourishment quietly — it produces fruit that others can see and taste.

Fruit That Reaches Others. John, writing decades later, makes clear this outward love isn't optional decoration on genuine faith — it's proof of it: We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death 1 John 3:14

That's a striking test. Not "we know we've passed from death to life because we feel saved" — but because love for others has actually taken root. Abiding in Christ and loving others aren't two separate pursuits; they're the same reality seen from different angles.

Overflow, is something almost automatic once the source is right:  God is the source of life and light and joy to the universe. Like rays of light from the sun, like the streams of water bursting from a living spring, blessings flow out from Him to all His creatures. And wherever the life of God is in the hearts of men, it will flow out to others in love and blessing Steps to Christ, p. 77

Light doesn't strain to shine, and a spring doesn't strain to flow. If love for others feels forced and exhausting rather than something rising up naturally, it may be worth asking not "how do I love harder?" but "how close am I abiding to the source?"

A Question to Sit With: Is there someone in my life right now who needs the kind of love Jesus described — sacrificial, not just sentimental? What would abiding closer to Him free you to give them?

Lord, let Your love overflow through me the way light overflows from the sun — not strained, but natural, because I'm staying close to You. Show me who needs that love from me today. In Jesus' name,
